      This heartbreaking story, illustrated with somber realistic paintings, chronicles a friendship between a young boy and girl that ends too soon when the boy dies from a congenital heart condition. Although the ending is uplifting and hints at rebirth (a hummingbird returns repeatedly to the feeder the girl and boy made together, causing the girl to think "the strangest thought"), the bleakness of the death is hard to shake.
