Muchos años antes de escribir "El eterno femenino", Rosario Castellanos exploró la condición de la mujer a través de dos piezas dramáticas: "Salomé y Judith". Al trasladar la acción de Salomé a San Cristóbal de las Casas y la de Judith a Tierra Caliente, Chiapas, la autora consiguió sacar a la luz otro de los temas que más le preocuparon a lo largo de su trayectoria: el del esclavismo indígena por parte de los caciques. La novedad de ambos escritos recae en la reinterpretación de las heroínas bíblicas que actúan por el bien común de los oprimidos: mujeres e indígenas.
