Highly influential in C. S. Lewis' conversion from atheism to Christianity, The Everlasting Man continues to inspire new generations of readers.Considered by many to be Chesterton's greatest masterpiece, this book declares his comprehensive view of world history as informed by the Incarnation. Retelling mankind's story from the very beginning, he shows how all human desires are fulfilled in the person of Christ and Christ's church. With his characteristic brilliance and irony, he argues that Christianity is not just a religion to stand beside other religions, for the fact of the Incarnation sets it apart. One of the most original and controversial theological works ever written, The Everlasting Man offers a commanding perspective of world history and aims to restore our sense of wonder in the universe, our God, and ourselves.

Derek Perkins's accessible delivery perfectly suits this dense work, which is said to have converted C.S. Lewis to Christianity from atheism. Although written in 1925, THE EVERLASTING MAN sounds surprisingly contemporary. Perkins's style deftly captures Chesterton's quest to identify what, if anything, makes a human uniquely human. Audio is the ideal format to fully appreciate Chesterton's complexity. The book's two parts--"On the Creature Called Man" and "On the Man Called Christ"--are made more understandable with Perkins's intelligent delivery and elegant pronunciation. Chesterton also rebuts gently, and sometimes humorously, H.G. Wells's OUTLINE OF HISTORY, a work that some consider anti-Christian. Listeners will be pleased to hear that the wit and wisdom found in the author's Father Brown mysteries are also present here. S.G.B. © AudioFile 2016, Portland, Maine
