What would you say if you could talk to ponies?

It's hard being the new girl in town—new school, new stable, new rivalries. It seems Pia's only friend is her pony, Drummer. But horses can't talk...can they?

Suddenly, all the horses are talking—to Pia! Now she can understand Drummer, and does he have a lot to say! Who knew this sweet-looking horse would have such an attitude. When news of Pia's pony-whispering power spreads, her popularity grows and she finally feels like she belongs...that's when everything starts to go wrong.

Gr 4-8-After her parents divorce, British equestrian Pia and her pony, Drummer, have to move to a new stable. On her first day, she finds herself at odds with another boarder who wanted to move her horse to the stall that Pia is given. Later, she learns that Catriona has a big crush on James and hoped that having her horse next to his would increase her chances with him. While out riding, Pia finds an ancient statuette and discovers that she can understand everything the horses are saying. As she secretly tries to use this gift to help other riders with their animals, she gains a reputation as a "pony whisperer." This creates numerous complications in her life including offers to appear on TV. This combination of magic and a quick-moving, contemporary plot woven around horse and human conflicts and friendships is a light and enjoyable read for fans of this genre. The horses are particularly amusing as they reveal their complaints and requests to their owners through Pia.-Carol Schene, formerly at Taunton Public Schools, MA

Grades 4-6 The cover of Risings latest equine tale doesnt advertise its supernatural content, instead focusing on another key ingredient: a girls connection with her pony. Originally published in the UK in 2009, this series starter introduces Pia, the new girl in town, who tells the story as only a young teenager can. Its not like my dads new girlfriend is drop-dead gorgeous, just thin and pale with a face as long as Drums tail. Yuck. Drummer, her pony, is her only comfort, and soon he is settled in his new stable despite a dustup with another young pony owner. Friction between girls always offers drama, but Rising soon adds a magical element: Pia and Drummer trip on a small statue of a horse and rider, and they soon discover it allows Pia to hear Drummers and other ponies thoughts. Entertainingly, the ponies converse much like their human owners, and Pias popularity at her new school surges when her gift becomes known. Complications ensue, but Pia is a likable and sensible narrator throughout.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2010, American Library Association.)
